New Patna SSP Vows Firm Action to Tackle Crime, Urges Public Cooperation

New Patna SSP Kartikeya Sharma pledges decisive, community-focused policing with a firm stance on crime prevention and officer discretion.

Patna: Kartikeya K Sharma, newly appointed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Patna, has pledged a tough and proactive approach to policing, placing crime prevention and public safety at the top of his agenda.

Assuming office with a ceremonial guard of honour, SSP Sharma was joined by senior officials including Patna Central and Rural Superintendents of Police. Addressing the media shortly after, he outlined a clear mandate the police force will act decisively and independently to restore a sense of safety among Patna’s residents.

“In cases of serious crime or self-defence, police officers are empowered to respond appropriately, including the use of firearms,” Kartikeya stated. “Action will be taken at the discretion of officers on the ground, with the safety of the public as our foremost concern.”

Acknowledging the unique challenges of policing in Bihar’s capital, which he described as a “dense and complex urban space,” Sharma stressed that his primary objective is to ensure that people can step out of their homes without fear.

He credited his confidence to a “capable and experienced team,” and reiterated that crime prevention, rather than reaction, would be the cornerstone of his leadership. “Our approach must be preemptive. The focus will be on ensuring crimes do not occur, not just investigating them after the fact.”

Emphasising the need for strong community relations, Sharma called for deeper cooperation between the police and the public. “The police and the people are not separate – we are one. Effective policing is only possible when citizens feel heard and supported. We urge the public to come forward without fear, and we will ensure our officers actively engage with communities.”
