Patna: Authorities in Bihar uncovered a disturbing case of wildlife and liquor smuggling on Sunday night when 22 live turtles and 7 litres of foreign liquor were found aboard the Amritsar–Howrah Express. The recovery was made during a routine check between Patna Sahib and Fatuha stations.
The contraband was discovered near the toilet of a sleeper coach in train number 13006. Two unclaimed bags aroused suspicion. Passengers denied ownership, and upon inspection, one bag was found stuffed with turtles of various sizes, while the other contained liquor bottles.
The incident has sparked concern among wildlife officials in Bihar, as the state gives special protection to turtles under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. It is illegal to capture, sell, or consume turtle meat, and violations can lead to serious legal consequences.
Manoj Kumar, the GRP in-charge at Fatuha, confirmed that the smugglers likely fled the train after noticing the checking team. A case has been registered, and a multi-departmental probe is now underway to identify those involved and determine the route and purpose of the smuggling attempt.
The Wildlife Department has been informed, and forest officials are expected to join the investigation.
