Nawada/Patna: Four men have been arrested in Bihar’s Nawada district for allegedly gang-raping a young woman from a Mahadalit community after she returned from medical treatment in Lucknow, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning between 9am and 10am, when the woman, who had arrived in Nawada by bus, was lured away while travelling in an e-rickshaw. Police said the rickshaw driver, along with three accomplices, took her to a deserted house in Rasul Nagar, where they raped her and fled with her mobile phone.
All four suspects — Mumtaz Mansuri, Mohammed Sameer, Mohammed Arman and Mohammed Sabir, residents of Nawada town — were arrested within 18 hours of the crime, said Nawada Sadar SDPO Hulas Kumar. “The incident has been investigated by the forensic and medical teams. The accused are being sent to jail,” he said.
The survivor, who comes from Roh police station area, had travelled to Lucknow for medical treatment. After staying overnight with relatives in Gaya on Monday, she boarded an early morning bus to Nawada on Tuesday. Upon arrival at Sadbhavna Chowk around 8.30am, she hired an e-rickshaw for her onward journey home, police said.
It was during this journey that the driver allegedly conspired with his accomplices to commit the assault. Police launched raids based on technical surveillance and human intelligence to track down the suspects.
