Patna: Large swathes of Patna have been left waterlogged following continuous heavy rains, paralysing daily life across the city. Streets, homes, markets and railway tracks are submerged under up to four feet of water, with residents reporting major disruptions and mounting losses.
One of the worst-affected areas is Dakbungla Chauraha, a busy commercial hub, where water levels have risen to nearly waist-deep. Other key localities including S.K. Puri, Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar and parts of Patna City have seen similar flooding, bringing traffic to a halt and leaving hundreds of households and businesses struggling.
In Danapur, a school was inundated with four feet of water, while in commercial zones like Khetan Market, traders said goods worth lakhs have been damaged. “Everything is on hold. Water has entered our shop and there’s no way to continue work,” said one shopkeeper.
Low-lying areas remain worst hit, with reports of homes fully surrounded or flooded. Train operations have also been impacted due to submerged tracks.
Orange alert issued
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Patna and 19 other districts in Bihar, warning of continued heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. The department also cautioned residents about the risk of lightning and strong winds, which could exacerbate the situation.
Emergency response underway
In response, the Patna Municipal Corporation and Bihar Disaster Management Department have deployed relief teams. Pumping stations have been activated, but drainage efforts have struggled to keep up with the deluge.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and to reach out to emergency helplines in case of distress. The administration remains on alert as the rains continue.
