Bettiah: A 15-year-old girl in Bettiah, Bihar, died by suicide on Friday after a family dispute over her late-night Instagram chat. The girl, Sujata Sharma, was a class 9 student and lived with her family in a rented house at Pipra Chowk.
Police said Sujata was using Instagram around 2am when her elder brother noticed her chatting on the phone. He asked her to open the door, but by then she had deleted the chat ID and number. Angered, the brother slapped and scolded her.
On Friday morning, while the family was busy with household work, Sujata hanged herself in her room. She was rushed to a nearby doctor, who declared her dead. Out of fear of dispute, the family buried her body quietly, but villagers later informed the police.
Police officers said the family themselves took out the body for postmortem after being questioned. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and her mobile chats and call history are being examined. The incident has caused shock in the local community.
