Patna: Bihar’s first modern crematorium is taking shape at Bans Ghat in Patna, with the project led by Patna Smart City in collaboration with BUIDCO at a cost of Rs 89.4 crore. The facility is set to be managed by Sadhguru, founder of the Isha Foundation.
The crematorium, spread across 4.5 acres—nearly three times the size of the city’s previous facility—is designed to blend modern infrastructure with spiritual symbolism. Two monumental gates, named Moksha and Baikunth, will mark the entrance, with the Moksha gate rising to 46.58 feet. Both gates will feature bronze Om symbols, and a Shiva statue will be installed for worship.
Four electric cremation ovens have already been installed, alongside two ponds intended for immersion of ashes and ritual bathing, complete with decorative fountains.
The complex will include two waiting halls, two prayer rooms, two worship rooms, an administrative office, a canteen, a temple, staff quarters, six block toilets, two changing rooms, a 40-square-metre substation, a mortuary, internal roads, parking facilities, and a public announcement system.
A team from Coimbatore, involved in the project’s design, visited the site and described the premises as visually striking. The new crematorium is expected to provide a more spacious and modern alternative to the city’s former 1.24-acre cremation ground.
