Vaishali: A 70-year-old man, Hashim Shah, from Chausima Kalyanpur village of Rajapakar, died in police custody after being accused of attacking a police team in Mahua, Vaishali district. The incident has led to the deployment of a large number of police personnel as tensions remain high in the area.
The police stated that the attack occurred during a late-night altercation over unpaid ice cream in Chausima Kalyanpur Fakir Tola, during which anti-social elements assaulted the officers. Four police personnel were seriously injured, and police vehicles, including those of the 112 Dial service, were damaged. During the scuffle, the pistol of a police inspector fell but was later recovered by senior officials.
Hashim Shah and four others were arrested and taken to Mahua police station. According to police reports, Shah’s health deteriorated suddenly while in custody, leading to his transfer to the subdivisional hospital, where he died during treatment. The post-mortem is being conducted at Sadar Hospital under the supervision of the magistrate. Relatives of the deceased have alleged that police beat him, though authorities maintain he died due to health complications.
The Superintendent of Police and other senior officers are present in the area to monitor the situation. Police have called in personnel from multiple police stations, including Mahua, Bhagwanpur, Patepur, Jandaha, and Industrial police stations, to maintain law and order.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the attack on the police team and the death of Shah in custody.
