Patna: A serious accident was narrowly averted in Patna on Sunday afternoon when a car carrying three students veered out of control and plunged into the Son canal near Naharpura in the Janipur police station area.
The vehicle, which was travelling from Naubatpur towards AIIMS Patna, reportedly suffered a steering failure. According to police, the car first struck an electric pole before overturning into the canal.
All three passengers – identified as Rajan Kumar, Shubham Shekhar and Sonu, residents of Bhikhanpur in Muzaffarpur – managed to escape by opening the doors and jumping into the water. They sustained only minor injuries.
Eyewitnesses said there was panic at the site as the car hit the water. A local youth, Avinash Yadav, leapt into the canal to help, fearing those inside might be trapped. By the time he reached the vehicle, the students had already got out safely. His quick response was nonetheless praised by onlookers.
Police arrived shortly after the incident and launched a rescue operation to retrieve the car. “There was no major damage and all the students are safe,” the station house officer said, adding that the vehicle is being examined to determine the cause of the steering failure.
