Patna: Bihar Police is gearing up for a major modernisation drive, with plans to equip its forces with advanced weapons, smart policing tools, and cutting-edge technology. The initiative, revealed by ADG (Modernisation) Sudhanshu Kumar at a press conference at Police Headquarters, Sardar Patel Bhawan, is part of the centrally sponsored scheme Assistance to States and UT for Modernisation of Police (ASUMP). Under the scheme, 60% of the funds will come from the central government, while the state will contribute the remaining 40%.
A total of Rs 66 crore has been earmarked for the 2025-26 financial year to make the police force more efficient and technology-driven. “We are investing in vehicles, communication tools, weapons, and other essential equipment to ensure that Bihar Police is equipped to tackle modern-day challenges,” Kumar said. The plan also includes installing CCTV cameras, with 1,212 stations already covered and 176 more slated to receive cameras under an allocation of Rs 280 crore, pending final approvals.
The state is also strengthening specialized divisions. The Special Security Group (SSG) has received approval for Rs 21.37 crore to bolster training and security measures ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Similarly, the Bomb Disposal Squad will receive equipment worth Rs 20.57 crore, of which Rs 10.57 crore has already been released. The Special Task Force (STF) will be upgraded with Rs 6.28 crore worth of new tools, while the Economic Offences Unit will establish a Security Operation Center for cybercrime, backed by Rs 14.75 crore.
Other key allocations include Rs 6.60 crore for the Bihar Special Armed Police, Rs 44 lakh for the Railway Police, and Rs 91 lakh for the Special Branch, aimed at modernising intelligence-gathering and training facilities. Officials emphasised that this modernisation effort is part of a larger strategy to ensure faster response times, enhanced cyber security, and a technologically advanced police system capable of addressing both traditional and emerging threats.
