Patna: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made it compulsory for political parties and candidates to clearly label any election-related content created using artificial intelligence (AI), ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
The decision comes amid a growing use of AI-generated videos, images, and other digital content in political campaigns, raising concerns over misinformation and voter confusion. Under the new directive, all campaign material created using AI must carry a prominent disclaimer stating that it is “AI-generated,” “synthetic content,” or “digitally in-hand.”
Election officers across all 243 assembly constituencies have been instructed to monitor compliance. Any party or candidate found posting AI-based content without the appropriate label will be considered in violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
The commission has also issued a special advisory to political parties, emphasising transparency and accountability in the use of AI during the election. “AI-generated content can be deepfake and misleading,” the ECI warned. “It has the potential to influence voters’ opinions and undermine the fairness of the electoral process.”
To counter misinformation, the ECI said it will actively monitor AI content on social media and other platforms, promptly refuting any misleading material with verified information.
