Chirag Triumphs as NDA Shuffles Seats: Bihar Braces for Lok Sabha Elections Amidst Paras Rift

Patna: In the latest chapter of familial strife within Indian politics, Pashupati Paras and Chirag Paswan have emerged as the newest uncle-nephew duo embroiled in a high-stakes showdown. Similar to numerous other political dynasties before them, it appears that the nephew may have emerged victorious in the final bout. Sources privy to the matter suggest that an embittered Paras may imminently tender his resignation as the Union Minister of Food Processing Industries, marking a dramatic turn of events.

At the centre of this familial turmoil is the announcement of seat- sharing arrangement in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The unveiling of the seat-sharing agreement on Monday showcased a calculated electoral strategy, albeit at the expense of disregarding claims from a pivotal ally, the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP), helmed by Union Minister Pashupati Paras.

Under this arrangement, the BJP is slated to contest 17 Lok Sabha seats, while Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) is positioned to vie for 16 seats. Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has secured 5 Lok Sabha seats, with additional allocations to the remaining NDA partners, Hindustani Awam Morcha and Rashtriya Lok Morcha, each receiving one seat.

The exclusion of Pashupati Paras from this electoral calculus signals a seismic shift, potentially igniting an intra-party electoral clash within the Lok Janshakti Party.

The roots of this internal rift within the Lok Janshakti Party trace back to June 2021 when Paras, brother of late Ram Vilas Paswan, rebelled against the leadership of Chirag, fracturing the party’s unity. The subsequent embrace of Paras and his faction by the BJP further exacerbated tensions within the party ranks.

Despite the tumult, Chirag has maintained a cooperative stance with the BJP, aligning himself closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His recent expressions of gratitude towards Modi for support within the alliance underscore the evolving power dynamics within the NDA in Bihar.

The electoral repercussions of this maneuver are poised to reverberate across the state, particularly in the Hajipur constituency, where Paras has signaled his intent to contest against his nephew.
