Bihar Braces for Hotter Days as Temperatures Soar
Patna: Patna and various regions across Bihar are gearing up for scorching temperatures nearing the 40 degrees Celsius mark by the upcoming weekend, according to forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The prediction, which coincides with the IMD’s projection of an exceptionally hot summer spanning April to June across the nation, has raised concerns about prolonged periods of extreme heat.
The IMD’s latest warning on Monday highlighted the likelihood of “extreme heat” and a significant increase in the number of heatwave days compared to typical seasonal patterns. The onset of heatwaves is expected to commence in Bihar from April 10 onwards, with the weather bureau indicating predominantly dry conditions accompanied by strong sunlight and a reduced perception of heat due to dry north-westerly winds.
Recent observations from the Patna meteorological center indicate a notable uptick in temperatures across various districts, with Vaishali district registering a scorching 40.5 degrees Celsius on Monday. This follows Sunday’s record-breaking temperature of 41.9 degrees Celsius in the same district, signaling the intensifying impact of the dry north-westerly winds.
The prevailing dry winds, coupled with an anticipated dry westerly airflow since the beginning of April, are likely to exacerbate heatwave conditions, with average maximum temperatures forecasted to soar up to 40 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, the Meteorological Department has cautioned of below-average rainfall, with a Western disturbance expected to affect weather patterns around April 5, possibly leading to a temporary respite in temperatures for a brief period.
The onset of “Kaal Baisakhi,” a weather phenomenon characterized by rain, thunder, lightning, hailstorms, and dust storms, is also anticipated this month, posing additional challenges to Bihar’s weather landscape. Last April witnessed sporadic rainfall and cloudy weather in several parts of Bihar, including Patna, offering temporary relief from escalating temperatures.
As Bihar braces for the impending heatwave and associated weather phenomena, authorities are advising residents to take necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of the anticipated extreme weather conditions.
