Ara: A sombre mood has descended over the Tarari Assembly constituency following the death of Chandrashekhar Singh, the Jan Suraaj candidate and a well-known social activist. Singh, a retired head teacher admired locally for his simplicity, honesty and decades of community service, passed away on Friday evening amid the heat of the election results.
According to family and party sources, Singh suffered a heart attack around 3am on Friday and was rushed to Ruban Hospital in Patna, where he was placed under medical supervision. His condition reportedly worsened in the afternoon. He experienced a second heart attack at 4pm, and despite doctors’ efforts, died at 7pm.
Singh’s health had first deteriorated on October 31, during ongoing campaign activities, prompting his admission to Ruban Hospital. Doctors later diagnosed him with kidney failure, for which he had been receiving treatment.
A respected figure in Tarari and beyond, Singh had previously been an active member of the Teachers’ Union and had served as state president of the Brahmarshi Samaj. His standing in the community was widely acknowledged, and his nomination by Jan Suraaj was seen as an attempt to bring a grassroots, service-oriented leader into the political arena.
Chhote Singh, his election agent and a farmer leader, confirmed the news over the phone. As word spread, Tarari, Kurmuri and surrounding villages were plunged into grief. Residents described his death as an “irreparable loss” for the region.
As of the time of reporting, Singh’s body had not yet reached his ancestral village of Kurmuri, where it is expected to arrive late in the night.
