Muzaffarpur: In what officials described as a “significant breakthrough”, the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday seized nearly 1.016 kg of high-grade heroin, valued at Rs. 6 crore, arresting two alleged traffickers — one of them a woman with previous narcotics cases. The operation, carried out after a covert intelligence alert, has opened new questions about a possible deeper supply chain still at large.
City SP Kota Kiran Kumar confirmed that the action was taken after STF’s narcotics wing received information about a major movement of heroin from Muzaffarpur railway station towards Bairiya bus stand under Ahiyapur police station.
“Both suspects were intercepted at Bairiya bus stand following swift coordination between STF and local police,” the City SP said.
Targeted Operation at Bairiya Bus Stand
Led by SDPO Town-2 Vineeta Sinha, a special team traced the suspects’ route and conducted a rapid interception. Officers recovered:
-
1,016 grams of heroin
-
Two mobile phones believed to contain trafficking communication
-
Documents pointing to possible forward and backward linkages
Police sources said the woman — Poonam Devi, a resident of Nakaradei under East Champaran — had been previously jailed under the NDPS Act. The second accused, Rajeshwar Pandit, is from Gharharwa village, also in East Champaran.

Was This Shipment Part of a Larger Consignment?
Investigators say the method of movement, the quality of the seized heroin, and the route chosen suggest the pair were part of a structured trafficking chain.
According to STF’s preliminary probe, the duo may have been couriers, not the primary suppliers.
“We are examining the chain of handlers. More arrests may follow,” officials said.
Case Registered Under NDPS Act
Ahiyapur police have lodged Case No. 1569/25 under stringent sections of the NDPS Act. Digital forensics experts are analysing the recovered mobile phones to identify contacts, call routes, and payment trails.
Officials believe the Muzaffarpur corridor may be emerging as a preferred transit route for traffickers attempting to bypass increased surveillance in bordering districts.
A Pattern of Recent Recoveries
This operation comes days after:
-
four traffickers were arrested with heroin worth Rs. 5 crore in Bihar, and
-
a pregnant woman was caught allegedly using delivery expenses as a motive to enter drug peddling.
