Patna: Police officers in Bihar have been strictly warned that arrogance and rude behaviour toward the public will no longer be accepted. According to a new order issued by the Bihar Police Headquarters, any officer who misbehaves with ordinary citizens will face disciplinary action. The decision comes after several recent incidents where police personnel were seen behaving in an unacceptable manner with members of the public.
A formal letter has been sent to all Director Generals, ADGs, IGs, DIGs and SPs, instructing them to ensure that every police officer treats people with respect. The Additional Director General of Police mentioned in the letter that the issue was discussed during a Welfare Fund meeting, where concerns were raised about increasing cases of misbehaviour by officials. The police leadership agreed that such actions damage the image of the department and reduce public trust.
Examples of recent action were also highlighted during the meeting. The Director General of Police, Vinay Kumar, pointed out that officers from Patna’s Nadi police station and Katihar’s Barsoi police station were suspended after behaving rudely with the public. Officials said that incidents like these not only hurt people but also destroy confidence in the police, making cooperation between citizens and law enforcement more difficult.
Senior officers across the state have now been instructed to guide their subordinates and make sure they follow polite and respectful behaviour while on duty. If any officer acts aggressively or mistreats a citizen, they must be identified and punished immediately. This order follows viral videos, including one where police officers were seen misbehaving with a rider in Patna, and another where a policeman took a pregnant woman’s scooter on the JP Ganga Path. Although similar orders have been issued before, the Police Headquarters hopes that this time the change will be visible and lasting.
