Patna: Agriculture minister Ram Kripal Yadav has vowed to take “concrete steps” to address long-standing grievances raised by farmers in Patna, declaring that “the suffering of farmers is my own suffering”.

Yadav attended a Kisan Chaupal – a community meeting focused on agricultural issues – in Dhawalpura, on the outskirts of Patna City, on Sunday, where he was greeted by a large gathering of local farmers and officials. Participants outlined a series of demands, ranging from infrastructure improvements to essential supply shortages.

The minister said agricultural development and farmer welfare remained central priorities for both the central and Bihar governments under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Nitish Kumar. “Farmers will not be allowed to suffer and any negligence will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that he was aware of the sector’s challenges and would work towards effective solutions.

Farmers submitted a memorandum listing key demands, including the paving of canals, construction of underpasses beneath the national highway, a lasting solution to waterlogging, timely access to seeds, fertilisers and pesticides, the establishment of vegetable markets, and reliable electricity for irrigation.

The event was attended by senior officials and public representatives, including the chair of the state farmer commission, Roop Narayan Mehta, and MLA Ratnesh Kushwaha.
