Patna: Bihar’s Jamui district has now been home to two newly designated Ramsar sites – the Nagi Bird Sanctuary and the Nakati Bird Sanctuary. With these additions, Bihar has now 3 Ramsar Sites inclusive of the Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary in Begusarai already holding the prestigious designation.
The announcement was made by Bihar’s Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Department, with Secretary Bandana Preyashi expressing joy over the recognition, highlighting its significance in bird conservation efforts. Tejas Jayaswal, the District Forest Officer of Jamui, credited the concerted efforts of local communities and government agencies for achieving this milestone.
The Nagi Bird Sanctuary, established after the construction of Nagi Dam, provides habitat to over 75 bird species, 33 fish species, and 12 aquatic plant species. Similarly, the Nakati Bird Sanctuary, developed primarily for irrigation through the construction of Nakati Dam, supports over 150 species of birds, mammals, fish, aquatic plants, and reptiles.
The Ramsar designation emphasizes their significance as critical habitats for wildlife conservation and emphasizes Bihar’s commitment to environmental management. Ramsar sites, named after the Ramsar Convention established by UNESCO in 1971, are internationally recognized wetlands of global importance. The designation serves to highlight the ecological significance of these areas and underscores the need for their protection and sustainable management.
