Patna: The birth anniversary of senior BJP leader and former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi will be observed on January 5 with a state-level programme in Patna, bringing together leaders from both the state and central governments.
Details of the event were shared on Friday by Sanjay Gupta, the BJP MLA from Kumhrar, who said the main event would be held at Shri Krishna Memorial Hall under the aegis of the Sushil Modi Research Institute. The occasion, he said, would serve as a moment to reflect on Modi’s political, social and ideological contributions to Bihar.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to attend the programme as the chief guest. Deputy chief ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Union minister Giriraj Singh, and BJP’s Bihar in-charge Vinod Tawde are also scheduled to be present.
As part of the commemorations, a statue of the late leader will be unveiled at Rajendra Nagar Park in Patna, a gesture organisers say is intended as a lasting tribute to his role in Bihar’s development and his reputation for administrative discipline.
Another highlight of the programme will be the felicitation of students and researchers who have undertaken academic work on Sushil Kumar Modi’s life, ideology and governance record. According to organisers, the initiative aims to encourage younger generations to engage with public policy, politics and questions of good governance.
Born on January 5, 1952, Sushil Kumar Modi began his public life in student politics before emerging as one of the BJP’s most prominent faces in Bihar. Over a long career, he served as deputy chief minister and finance minister in the state, and later as a member of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
As finance minister, he was widely credited with pushing fiscal discipline and strengthening Bihar’s public finances during a period of rapid development. At the national level, he played a visible role in parliamentary debates around the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST), and was known for his outspoken stance on issues of corruption and governance.
