Kosi River Floods: Over 300 Villages at Risk in Supaul District

Supaul: Continuous rains in Nepal have caused the Kosi River to overflow, exacerbating the difficulties for residents in the eastern and western embankment areas of the Supaul district in Bihar. The water level has reached the highest discharge recorded this year, with 3,00,860 cusecs of water discharged at the Kosi Barrage on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm.

To manage the excess water, 41 out of 56 gates of the Kosi Barrage were opened, aiming to rapidly discharge the river’s water level. Despite these efforts, the residents of Supaul district are facing significant challenges due to the rising water.

Vinod Kumar Mehta, a resident of Basantpur block, reported that the early and excessive discharge of water this year has destroyed crops of mung, patua, paddy, and ladyfinger. Farmers are distressed as crops grown on many acres have been ruined. The rising water levels threaten to flood approximately 350 villages within the eastern and western embankments, further worsening the lives of the common people.

Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, Manoj Kumar Raman, assured that the embankment remains safe despite predictions of further rises in water levels. Continuous monitoring is being conducted to ensure the embankment’s integrity.

Residents and authorities remain on high alert as they brace for potential flooding and its aftermath.
