Patna: The Prisons and Correctional Services Department under the Home Department of the Government of Bihar has received a SKOCH Award for its work in digital literacy and prisoner rehabilitation, officials said on Sunday.
The award was conferred at the 105th SKOCH Summit, held under the “Governing Viksit Bharat” programme in New Delhi, recognising efforts to modernise prison education and improve post-release outcomes for inmates.
The honour was accepted by Pranav Kumar, Home Secretary, Bihar-cum-Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services, at the award ceremony. He was accompanied by Vinod Kumar Prabhaskar, prisoner welfare officer, and Jyotsna Singh, probation officer, from the Prisons Inspectorate.
Officials said the recognition reflects the department’s focus on equipping inmates with practical skills in an increasingly digital economy. Computer laboratories have been set up in several prisons across Bihar to provide structured training in basic and advanced computer applications.
Under the programme, inmates are enrolled in certified computer courses conducted through the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT). On completion, participants receive formal certificates intended to improve their chances of securing employment after release.
Senior officials said the initiative is aimed not only at skill development but also at social reintegration. By linking digital education with employment opportunities, the department hopes to reduce recidivism and help former inmates transition back into mainstream society with greater confidence and independence.
