Patna: Bihar is not expected to get any significant relief from the cold in the coming days, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for fog in 15 districts on Wednesday and warned of a fresh dip in temperatures later this month.
According to the IMD, a western disturbance is likely to affect north India from January 18, with cold conditions expected to intensify across Bihar from January 20. Light rainfall is also possible in western and north-western parts of the state during this period.
At present, minimum temperatures in 18 districts remain below 10C. In the past 24 hours, Sabour in Bhagalpur recorded a low of 5.9C. Dense fog was observed across much of the state in the morning, including in Patna, though skies cleared as the day progressed, allowing bright sunshine and offering limited daytime relief.

Meteorologists said the influence of the earlier western disturbance over north India has temporarily weakened. “Low wind speed and high humidity are creating favourable conditions for fog formation in the mornings,” an IMD scientist said. Clear daytime skies, however, are allowing temperatures to rise, making afternoons feel relatively warmer even as nights and early mornings remain cold.
The IMD said similar weather conditions are likely to persist over the next two to three days, with dense morning fog followed by sunny afternoons. While a sharp fall in minimum temperatures is not expected immediately, officials cautioned that there would be no complete relief from the cold during mornings and evenings.

In Patna, dense fog continues to shroud the city in the early hours, followed by sunshine during the day. The maximum temperature is hovering around 27C, while the minimum remains close to 10C. The IMD has forecast similar conditions for the capital over the next few days.
Meanwhile, easing cold conditions have prompted a partial relaxation of school restrictions in Patna district. District magistrate Dr Thyagarajan S.M. has allowed classes from Class 1 to Class 12 to begin from 9am. However, classes below Class 1 — including nursery, LKG and UKG — will remain closed until January 16. The order also applies to pre-schools and Anganwadi centres.
Earlier, the district administration had suspended classes up to Class 5 until January 13 as a precautionary measure amid the cold wave.
