Patna: Thick fog blanketed parts of Bihar on Thursday morning, severely affecting visibility in several districts, including Bagaha and Madhubani, where it dropped to as low as 20 metres. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a dense fog alert for 12 districts, warning of reduced visibility during early morning and late evening hours.
According to the weather department, fog conditions are likely to persist over the next two days, especially during night and morning hours. Drivers have been advised to remain cautious, use fog lights, and maintain low speed while travelling.
No Major Weather Change, Cold to Continue
Meteorologists said there are no signs of any major weather system affecting Bihar at present. While daytime sunshine may offer slight relief, cold conditions will continue during mornings and evenings. Over the past 24 hours, many parts of the state witnessed dense fog with visibility limited to around 100 metres.
Bhagalpur recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 9 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest district during the period.
Minimum Temperature May Drop by 2–4°C
The IMD has warned that minimum temperatures across Bihar and eastern India could fall by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next three days. This may intensify the cold wave conditions, especially at night and in the early morning.
Fog is expected to continue across northern Bihar districts, particularly in border areas, while daytime weather will remain mostly dry.
No Western Disturbance Active
Weather experts said the combination of north-westerly cold winds and moisture is leading to dense fog in north Bihar. Visibility in some areas may shrink to 50–100 metres in the morning hours.
“There is no active western disturbance at present, so rainfall is unlikely. However, cold and foggy conditions are expected to persist for a few more days,” a senior weather scientist said.
Patna to Feel Chill in Morning and Night
The capital Patna will experience normal winter weather. Although no yellow alert has been issued, residents will feel a chill during morning and late evening hours due to fog and cold winds.
The minimum temperature in Patna is expected to remain between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature will hover around 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Daytime sunshine will bring some relief from the cold.
Outlook for the Coming Days
The IMD forecast says fog will continue in northern Bihar for the next two to three days. Gradually, a slight rise in temperatures may be recorded, but no rainfall is expected in the immediate future.
Southern Bihar districts will see clearer weather with bright sunshine during the day.
Health Advisory Issued
Doctors have advised people to take special care during foggy conditions, as pollutants trapped in the air can worsen asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses. Complaints of eye irritation, coughing, and breathing difficulty may increase.
