The feature was first launched in September last year and has now become one of the app’s most useful tools for users who want to hide their surroundings or make calls look more professional. With just one simple prompt, users can transform their background into a mountain view, office setting, beach scene, or any other virtual environment.
The new tool works in a similar way to the virtual background features already available on video-calling platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. It helps people who are working from home, attending online meetings, or simply talking to friends and family without showing their real location. The feature also reduces distractions in the background, making the video call experience smoother and more focused.
For Android users, using the AI background feature is simple. To activate it, users need to open WhatsApp and start or join a video call. After turning on the camera, they can tap on the “Call Effects” button and then select “Backgrounds.” Here, users can choose from preset backgrounds or tap on “Create with AI” to generate a custom one. They only need to type a short description such as “office,” “mountains,” or “sunset beach,” and WhatsApp will create the image instantly. Users can also regenerate the image if they want another option or remove all effects whenever needed.
The same process is available for iPhone users as well. Users can open WhatsApp, start or join a call, switch on the camera, and then access “Call Effects” and “Backgrounds.” They can browse ready-made backgrounds or use the AI option to create a new one. As WhatsApp continues to add more creative features like filters and themes, this new AI-powered background tool is expected to make video calling more fun, stylish and private for millions of users worldwide.
