Patna: Bihar has made significant progress in preparations for Census 2027, with near-complete achievement in key preliminary tasks, officials said following a high-level review meeting chaired by chief secretary Pratyaya Amrit.
The meeting reviewed the status of the House Listing and Housing Census (HLBC) and the self-enumeration process, with divisional commissioners and district magistrates joining via video conference.
Rapid Progress In One Week
Officials said the state recorded a sharp rise in progress between April 20 and April 27.
House Listing Block (HLB) demarcation increased from 20.39% to 99.64%, while geo-tagging rose from 23.92% to 99.67%.
Out of 204,474 HLBs, demarcation has been completed in 203,745, with 33 districts achieving 100% completion in both demarcation and geo-tagging.
Surge In Self-Enumeration
The self-enumeration drive has also gained momentum, with over 2.7 million households completing the process so far.
In the past week alone, more than 2.4 million new entries were recorded, covering a large share of the targeted HLBs.
Districts such as Vaishali, Madhubani and Gopalganj emerged as top performers, while Patna and Bhojpur also recorded strong participation.
Directives For Next Phase
To ensure smooth implementation of the upcoming phase of the census, the chief secretary issued several instructions:
- Pending demarcation work in remaining districts must be completed within 24 hours
- Field-level re-verification of geo-tagging and demarcation to ensure data accuracy
- Special campaigns to boost self-enumeration in remaining households
- Final round of training for census staff and provision of required digital tools
- Daily monitoring of progress by district magistrates through official dashboards
Focus On Accuracy And Completion
Officials said the state aims to maintain its lead in census preparedness through strict monitoring and timely execution.
The next phase—house listing and housing census—is expected to build on the progress achieved so far, with an emphasis on accuracy and comprehensive coverage.
