Patna: The Bihar government is preparing to introduce evening coaching classes in government schools as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s public education system.
Under the proposed plan, students would attend additional classes after regular school hours to receive academic support and improve learning outcomes. The education department believes the initiative could reduce dependence on private coaching institutes, particularly among low-income families.
Feedback from students and parents
Education minister Sunil Kumar said the government would seek feedback from students and parents before implementing the scheme statewide.
Speaking at an event in Patna, he said the department did not want to introduce the programme in haste and would consider the convenience and requirements of students before finalising the framework.
Officials said the evening classes are intended to create a more competitive academic environment within schools and provide students with additional guidance.
Incentives for teachers
The department is also planning to offer financial incentives to teachers who conduct classes beyond regular school hours.
According to officials, the move is aimed at encouraging greater participation from teachers and ensuring the sustainability of the programme.
Focus on school infrastructure
Alongside academic reforms, the government has also asked district education officers to prepare lists of dilapidated and building-less schools.
The department said repair and construction work would begin after reports are submitted, as part of a broader push to improve school infrastructure and basic facilities.
Alumni outreach initiative
The state government is also preparing to launch a campaign titled Hamara Vidyalaya, Hamara Swabhiman to reconnect former students with their schools.
Under the initiative, successful alumni will be encouraged to support the development of their former institutions and, where possible, adopt schools for infrastructure or educational support.
Digital monitoring of complaints
The education department is additionally developing a digital grievance monitoring system called the “Smart Letter System”.
Officials said the platform would allow tracking of complaints and official correspondence, with the aim of improving transparency and ensuring timely resolution of issues within the department.
