Bhagalpur/Patna: Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH) in Bhagalpur is set to introduce an Emergency Medicine department, with the National Medical Commission (NMC) directing the institution to complete the necessary preparations and submit a report for approval.

If the required formalities are completed on schedule, the department could begin academic activities and admissions from the current academic session, according to officials.

Five PG Seats Proposed

The proposed department is expected to offer five postgraduate (PG) seats in Emergency Medicine. Senior doctors from the medical college will oversee training and academic activities for students.

The programme will also provide hands-on experience in managing a range of emergency medical conditions, strengthening specialised medical education at the institution.

Infrastructure Requirements Underway

Under NMC regulations, a dedicated 20-bed ward is mandatory for approval of five PG seats in Emergency Medicine.

To meet this requirement, JLNMCH principal Dr Sandeep Lal has directed the deputy superintendent of the super-speciality hospital and JLNMCH superintendent, Dr H P Dubey, to ensure the necessary arrangements are made.

The college administration has initiated preparations related to ward infrastructure and other essential resources. A detailed compliance report will be submitted to the NMC after the prescribed standards are met.

ICU and Trauma Services Expected to Benefit

Dr Mahesh Kumar, deputy superintendent of the super-speciality hospital, said the proposed department is expected to strengthen intensive care and trauma services at the hospital.

He noted that shortage of doctors remains a challenge for the institution. The addition of postgraduate trainees in Emergency Medicine could help improve monitoring and treatment of critically ill patients while supporting emergency care services.

Focus on Medical Education and Patient Care

Medical experts believe the establishment of the department will contribute to both medical education and healthcare delivery by creating a dedicated academic and clinical framework for emergency care.

The final rollout will depend on the institution meeting NMC requirements and obtaining the necessary approvals.
