Patna: The Bihar government is preparing to revive stone mining operations in seven districts after the monsoon season, with the Department of Mines and Geology initiating the process for online auctioning of mining leases.
Officials said District Survey Reports (DSRs) have been prepared for Sheikhpura, Gaya, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Kaimur and Banka districts, while the report for Nawada has already received departmental approval. The completion of these reports clears the way for the e-auction process to begin in all seven districts.
According to the department, mining activities are proposed across 31 stone quarries. Authorities believe the e-auction system will ensure greater transparency in the allocation of mining leases while also increasing state revenue. The move is expected to improve the local availability of stone, a key construction material that has often been sourced from neighbouring states due to limited mining activity within Bihar.
Detailed Environmental and Geological Assessment Completed
Officials said the District Survey Reports include extensive studies of environmental conditions, geological characteristics, mineral reserves and the likely impact of mining operations on surrounding areas.
The department has stated that mining leases will be auctioned only after all statutory approvals and regulatory requirements are completed. Mining operations are expected to commence in phases once the monsoon season ends.
Local Employment and Construction Sector Expected to Benefit
Industry experts believe the revival of stone mining will generate employment opportunities across the affected districts. Workers involved in transportation, crusher units and construction-related industries are expected to benefit from the renewed activity.
The prolonged slowdown in mining operations had also contributed to fluctuations in construction material prices. With fresh supplies expected to enter the market, stakeholders anticipate greater price stability and smoother execution of infrastructure projects.
Officials have also indicated that the entire auction process will be conducted online to ensure transparency and strengthen monitoring mechanisms. The department expects the system to help curb illegal mining and reduce irregularities in the sector.
