Patna: Bihar has achieved a major milestone in its clean energy journey after receiving a national award for its outstanding performance under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The state was honoured for successfully installing rooftop solar energy systems on the offices and official residences of District Magistrates across Bihar.
The award was presented during the national event, “Two Years of PM Surya Ghar: Expanding Solar Energy to One Crore Rooftops”, held in New Delhi on Thursday. Bihar received recognition under the ‘Surya Sankalp’ Initiative, which promotes the adoption of solar energy in government establishments.
The award was accepted on behalf of the state by Rahul Kumar (IAS), Managing Director of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL) and Director of BREDA.
The achievement is part of Bihar’s broader commitment to renewable energy under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Campaign. Under the initiative, the state government had decided to install solar energy systems on all government buildings. Officials said rooftop solar systems have already been installed on nearly 12,000 government buildings, significantly increasing the use of clean and sustainable energy in public institutions.
Welcoming the recognition, Ajay Yadav (IAS), Secretary of the Energy Department and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), described the award as a proud moment for Bihar. He said the achievement reflects the vision of the Chief Minister, the commitment of the Energy Department and the coordinated efforts of district administrations and various government agencies.
Ajay Yadav said the state continues to expand rooftop solar installations across government offices and official residences and remains committed to accelerating the transition towards renewable energy.
Rahul Kumar said the award acknowledges the collective efforts of officials, engineers and employees involved in implementing the programme. He noted that Bihar has made significant progress in both the execution of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and the solarisation of government infrastructure.
He added that the department is focused on extending the benefits of solar energy to households across the state while encouraging wider adoption of green energy solutions in the years ahead.
