Patna: The Bihar government and the Centre have initiated fresh discussions on accelerating agricultural growth and strengthening the rural economy in the state. A high-level meeting was held at the Loksevak Awas in Patna between Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Samrat Choudhary to formulate strategies aimed at increasing farmers’ income and promoting innovation in agriculture.
The meeting focused on linking farmers with modern technology, better market access, and economic security. Officials discussed measures to ensure farmers receive fair and remunerative prices for their produce, with the objective of improving agricultural profitability and strengthening livelihoods in rural areas.
Focus on Integrated Farming
A key area of discussion was the promotion of integrated farming systems. The approach encourages farmers to diversify beyond traditional crop cultivation by adopting activities such as animal husbandry, fisheries, horticulture, and allied sectors.
According to officials, diversification can help reduce risks arising from weather uncertainties and market fluctuations while creating multiple sources of income for farming households.
Strengthening Jeevika Groups
Women’s economic empowerment also featured prominently in the discussions. The leaders reviewed possibilities for strengthening the role of ‘Jeevika Didis’, members of Bihar’s self-help group network, in rural economic development.
The government believes that expanding livelihood opportunities and financial support for these groups can contribute significantly to the state’s goal of building a self-reliant rural economy.
Push for Agricultural Innovation
The meeting also examined ways to expand the use of modern technologies in agriculture. Discussions included the adoption of drone technology, smart farming practices, improved seed varieties, and digital agricultural services.
Officials considered a roadmap to extend these technologies to villages across the state to improve productivity and make farming more competitive.
Review of Farmer Welfare Schemes
The effectiveness of major welfare initiatives, including the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi and the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, was also reviewed during the meeting.
Participants discussed measures to strengthen implementation and ensure that farmers continue to receive financial assistance, crop insurance coverage, and income support through these programmes.
Towards a New Agricultural Model
Political and administrative observers view the meeting as a significant step towards shaping Bihar’s future agricultural policy. The government said its long-term objective is to make farmers self-reliant, strengthen the rural economy, and position Bihar as a model for agricultural development in the country.
