Begusarai: A wedding in Bihar’s Begusarai district has attracted widespread attention after a young man married his transgender partner in a traditional Hindu ceremony, following a five-year relationship. The public celebration, complete with a wedding procession, music and rituals, drew a large gathering of local residents.
According to those familiar with the couple, Vikas first met Sushila during a cultural event around five years ago. What began as casual conversations gradually developed into a long-term relationship.
Five-Year Relationship Led to Marriage
People close to the couple said Sushila was initially hesitant to pursue the relationship because of her transgender identity and concerns about social acceptance. However, Vikas continued to support her, and the two remained together for five years before deciding to marry.
Instead of opting for a private ceremony or court marriage, Vikas chose to publicly acknowledge their relationship. He arrived at Sushila’s residence with a wedding procession accompanied by a band, while friends and relatives joined the celebrations.
Wedding Held According to Hindu Rituals
The marriage was solemnised following traditional Hindu customs. A priest conducted the ceremony as the couple exchanged vows by taking the seven sacred rounds around the holy fire.
During the ceremony, Vikas applied sindoor to Sushila’s forehead, signifying their marriage. Members of the transgender community also attended in large numbers, offering blessings to the couple and participating in the farewell ceremony.
Wedding Sparks Discussion on Acceptance
Local residents said the marriage represented more than the union of two individuals, describing it as a reflection of changing social attitudes towards gender identity and personal choice.
Several attendees remarked that relationships based on mutual consent and respect deserve acceptance regardless of caste, class or gender identity.
Emotional Farewell
The vidaai ceremony was marked by emotional scenes as Sushila bid farewell to her friends and companions. While many were moved to tears, they also expressed happiness for the newlyweds and wished them a successful married life.
Following the ceremony, Vikas took Sushila to his home, where she was welcomed in accordance with traditional customs.
