Patna: In recognition of Bihar’s vulnerability to earthquakes, the state has initiated a significant training program for masons, aimed at promoting earthquake-resistant construction techniques. Eight districts in Bihar fall under earthquake zone-5, while 24 districts, including the capital, Patna, are classified under earthquake zone-4. To date, approximately 20,000 masons have been trained as part of this initiative.

Under the innovative leadership of Dr. Uday Kant, Vice Chairman of the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority, the program seeks to incorporate the latest technology into disaster management practices. The practical training for masons is designed not only to enhance their skills but also to improve their livelihoods sustainably. Upon completion, the masons will receive nationally and internationally recognized certificates.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on September 5, 2024, between the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to formalize this training initiative. The ambitious project, costing ₹26 crores, will span three years, providing ten-day residential training to 30 masons from each of the state’s 534 blocks. Participants will receive a daily stipend of ₹700, along with an advanced toolkit and certification signed jointly by the Authority and NSDC.

The MoU was officially exchanged during a meeting on Tuesday, where Meenendra Kumar, Secretary of the Authority, and Mayank Bhatnagar, National Head of NSDC, represented their respective organizations.

During the ceremony, Dr. Kant highlighted the program’s evolution from concept to execution and extended his best wishes to all stakeholders involved. Honorable Members P.N. Rai, Kaushal Kishore Mishra, Narendra Kumar Singh, and Prakash Kumar also attended the event.

The guests were welcomed by Dr. B.K. Sahay, Advisor (Technical) of the Authority. A demonstration of a shake table was conducted by NSDC representatives, providing detailed insights into the training program through a presentation. The ceremony also saw the presence of the Authority’s Special Secretary, Ashutosh Singh, Senior Research Officer Alok Ranjan, and NSDC’s Regional Head, Bhavna Verma, along with other professionals from both organizations. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Meenendra Kumar, IAS.
