Bhojpur/Patna: The mother of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, who died after a police encounter in Bhojpur district, has announced that she will begin an indefinite hunger strike from Thursday, demanding action in the case.
Asha Devi, a resident of Bilauti village in Shahpur block, said she would stage the protest near a tree outside her house and continue it until her demands are met.
Family seeks action against named officials
Asha Devi has demanded the immediate arrest of officials and others whom the family has accused in connection with her son’s death. She said the family had been seeking justice for a prolonged period and wanted prompt legal action.
Separately, Bharat Tiwari’s sister, Pooja Devi, called for action against Jagdishpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sanjeet Kumar, former Jagdishpur SDPO Rajesh Sharma, Station House Officer Rajesh Malakar, SI Ankit Aryan, ASI Sachitanand Yadav, STF personnel Akshay Kumar and others. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Demands include security and investigation updates
The family has also sought immediate security arrangements and has asked authorities to keep them informed about the progress of the investigation.
Pooja Devi said the family wanted regular updates on the inquiry and measures to ensure its safety.
Allegations over criminal cases against villagers
Asha Devi alleged that several young men from the village had been falsely implicated in police cases. According to the family, an FIR names 14 people while also referring to 50 unidentified accused.
She has demanded that what the family describes as false cases be withdrawn, alleging that innocent villagers are being harassed. The police have not publicly responded to these claims.
Surveillance allegation
Asha Devi further alleged that a black vehicle without a registration plate had been monitoring the family home late at night. She has sought an impartial inquiry into the allegation and the identification of those responsible.
Call for impartial probe
The family said it was willing to cooperate fully with the investigation but insisted that the inquiry should be conducted impartially and without external influence. It has demanded that those found responsible be held accountable.
Background
Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, who was known locally for raising social issues and advocating for flood-affected residents, was injured during a police encounter in Bhojpur and later died while undergoing treatment in Patna.
Before the incident, a video circulated showing Tiwari standing with a firearm in the presence of police personnel while questioning alleged corruption. His family alleges that he had surrendered by discarding the weapon before being shot at close range. Police have not publicly accepted this version of events. The circumstances surrounding the encounter remain under investigation.
