Patna: Bihar is expected to remain under the influence of an active monsoon system on July 16, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall in parts of north Bihar while the state capital is likely to see only light showers. The Meteorological Centre in Patna has issued a Yellow Alert for thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain in several districts.

According to the IMD, the most significant rainfall is expected in Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur, where heavy rain is forecast at isolated places on Thursday. Thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 30–40 kmph are also likely across parts of north-central, north-east and south-east Bihar.

What the IMD Forecast Says

The latest weather bulletin indicates that monsoon activity will remain widespread across Bihar, although rainfall intensity will vary by region.

The IMD has warned that isolated areas in north-central, north-east and south-east Bihar could experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Residents in districts under the alert have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense weather.

Heavy rainfall is specifically forecast for Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur, while neighbouring districts are also expected to receive moderate to fairly widespread rain.

Rainfall Recorded Over the Past 24 Hours

Monsoon showers continued across much of Bihar during the previous 24 hours, with light to moderate rainfall reported from several districts.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Maharajganj in Siwan district recorded the state’s highest rainfall during the period, receiving 81.2 mm of rain.

The widespread rainfall reflects the continued strength of the southwest monsoon, which has remained active across the state in recent days.

What to Expect in Patna

While northern Bihar is expected to receive the heaviest rain, the outlook for Patna and nearby districts is comparatively subdued.

The IMD said heavy rainfall is unlikely in Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Buxar and Rohtas on July 16. Instead, these districts may experience light rain or drizzle at one or two places, with generally overcast skies continuing through the day.

Although rainfall is expected to be less intense in the capital region, occasional showers may provide some relief from humid conditions.

District-Wise Weather Outlook

North-West Bihar

Light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places in West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan and Saran, according to the IMD.

North-Central and North-East Bihar

Alongside Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur, favourable monsoon conditions are expected in Vaishali, Supaul, Araria, Purnia and adjoining districts, where widespread rainfall is forecast.

South-East Bihar

The weather department has also forecast thunderstorms and rain in parts of Bhagalpur, Banka, Jamui, Munger and Khagaria.

Safety Advisory

The IMD has advised residents in districts covered by the yellow alert to remain alert during thunderstorms and lightning. People are encouraged to avoid open fields, seek shelter during lightning activity and follow updates issued by local authorities and the weather department.

With the monsoon expected to remain active over Bihar, the IMD will continue to monitor conditions and issue updated forecasts if weather systems intensify or shift across the state.
