Patna: Bihar has entered August with a significant rainfall deficit as the southwest monsoon continues to remain weak across most parts of the state. According to the latest weather data, Bihar has received 299 mm of rainfall so far this monsoon season, which is 43% below the normal average of 522.2 mm.
However, meteorologists have indicated that changing weather systems are likely to revive monsoon activity over the next three days. North Bihar is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on August 3 and 4, while residents of Patna and south-central Bihar may have to wait longer for widespread showers.
Patna recorded 5.4 mm of rainfall on Sunday, with the maximum temperature settling at 34 degrees Celsius.
Rain Forecast for August 3
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast:
- Heavy rainfall: Gopalganj and Siwan.
- Good rainfall likely: Kishanganj, Supaul and West Champaran.
- Light rain or drizzle: Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Nawada, Begusarai and Jehanabad.
Highest Rainfall in the Last 24 Hours
Among the districts that received significant rainfall during the past 24 hours:
- Kochas – 80 mm
- Chanpatia – 62.2 mm
- Narkatiaganj – 61 mm
- Ghat Kusumbha – 51 mm
- Pipra – 50 mm
Meanwhile, several districts, including Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Vaishali, Araria, Khagaria, Jehanabad and Nawada, remained completely dry during the same period.
Why Rainfall Is Expected to Increase
According to meteorologists, the monsoon trough currently extends from Bikaner through Sidhi, Daltonganj and Bankura up to Manipur. In addition, a trough line stretching from Rajasthan to Sikkim is passing over southeast Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The interaction of these weather systems is expected to strengthen monsoon activity across Bihar from August 3, bringing increased rainfall, particularly over the northern districts.
Despite the expected improvement, the state continues to face a substantial seasonal rainfall deficit, with south and central Bihar still awaiting widespread monsoon showers.
