Patna: Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor has emerged as an early frontrunner in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, according to initial counting trends. The constituency, located in Patna, has traditionally been considered a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), making the early lead politically significant.

After 19 rounds of counting, Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor was leading by 11,289 votes in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, drawing fresh attention to his political journey and personal background.

Early Lead in BJP Bastion

Bankipur has remained under BJP’s influence for several election cycles. BJP leader Nitin Nabin has represented the constituency multiple times, while his father also served as its MLA, making the seat one of the party’s long-standing strongholds in Bihar.

Kishor’s early lead has sparked political discussions over whether the by-election could indicate changing voter preferences. Political observers caution that trends during counting may shift before the final outcome is announced.

From Rohtas Village to Statewide Politics

Prashant Kishor was born on March 20, 1977, in Konar village of Rohtas district, Bihar. Although his ancestral home remains in the village, much of his childhood was spent in Buxar due to his father’s government service.

His father, Dr Shrikant Pandey, served as a government doctor, while his mother is a homemaker. According to public records, Kishor has four siblings. His elder brother, Ajay Kishor, is involved in business, while other family members largely remain away from public life.

Family and Personal Life

Kishor is married to Dr Jahnavi Das, a medical professional from Guwahati, Assam. The couple reportedly met while working on a United Nations health programme before marrying.

Election affidavits list their son as Daibik Bhardwaj. The family has generally maintained a low public profile.

On several occasions, Kishor has publicly credited his wife for supporting his political work by managing family responsibilities, allowing him to devote more time to organisational and public outreach activities in Bihar.

Education and Professional Career

Kishor completed his early schooling in Buxar before pursuing his higher secondary education at Patna Science College. He later earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from Lucknow University.

Before entering politics, he worked in the public health sector and was associated with United Nations health and development initiatives in India and overseas.

Rise as an Election Strategist

Prashant Kishor first gained national prominence as an election strategist, designing campaign strategies for several political parties and leaders across India. He became widely known after contributing to Narendra Modi’s successful campaign during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

In later years, he transitioned from political consultancy to active politics and launched the Jan Suraaj campaign in Bihar, positioning it as a platform focused on governance and political reform.

Why the Bankipur Contest Matters

The Bankipur by-election is being closely watched because of the constituency’s electoral history and the emergence of Jan Suraaj as a political force in Bihar.

If Prashant Kishor converts his early lead into a victory, it would represent a significant breakthrough for his party in a seat historically dominated by the BJP. However, with several rounds of counting still pending, the final outcome remains uncertain. Until official results are declared, the contest continues to be one of the most closely followed political developments in Bihar.
