Patna: Orthopedic operation theatres (Ortho OTs) in Bihar’s district hospitals and sub-divisional hospitals where orthopedic surgeries are performed will be upgraded with modern equipment to meet the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS), aiming to improve access to specialised treatment at the district level.

The State Health Society has instructed all districts to assess the resources required for the upgrade and submit detailed lists of equipment needed. The exercise also includes hospitals where orthopedic surgery services are proposed to begin.

The initiative is being implemented as a priority under the National Health Mission (NHM).

Resource Assessment Underway

Health authorities have directed districts to carry out a gap analysis to identify shortages in existing orthopedic operation theatres.

Based on the assessment and hospital-specific requirements, equipment will be procured and supplied through the Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (BMSICL).

Officials said the assessment will help ensure that hospitals receive equipment suited to their operational needs.

Modern Equipment to Be Installed

The upgraded operation theatres will be equipped with a range of medical devices required for orthopedic procedures.

These include operation theatre tables with orthopedic attachments, anaesthesia workstations, electric suction machines, autoclaves, 12-channel ECG machines, infusion pumps, C-arm imaging systems, arthroscopy systems, crash carts, patient trolleys and IV stands.

District-Level Care Expected to Improve

The upgrade is expected to strengthen the treatment of patients with road accident injuries, fractures, sports injuries and other bone-related conditions at district hospitals.

Health officials expect improved infrastructure to reduce the number of patients referred to larger hospitals for orthopedic surgeries, allowing more procedures to be performed closer to patients’ homes.

Maintenance and Monitoring

The State Health Society has also directed hospitals to ensure proper installation of all equipment and maintain accurate records.

Each piece of equipment will be entered in stock registers and registered on the e-Upkaran portal. Asset IDs will be assigned to every device, and their operational status will be monitored regularly to support uninterrupted healthcare services.
