Patna: The Shiva temple located within the premises of Chauk Police Station in Patna City has remained a place of worship and public faith since 1902. During the holy month of Sawan, the temple witnesses a steady flow of devotees who visit to offer prayers and perform Jalabhishek with water from the Ganges.

The temple is decorated with Belpatra and traditional offerings during Sawan, while worship continues throughout the year. Local residents regard the shrine as an important religious site where devotees pray for the fulfilment of their wishes.

Temple Rebuilt as a 51-Foot Structure

According to the temple priest, a small Shiva shrine has existed within the police station premises since the establishment of the police station in 1902.

The foundation ceremony for the present temple was performed in 2016, with five sacred gems placed beneath the structure as part of the rituals. On June 22, 2018, the temple was renovated under the supervision of the then Station House Officer, with support from members of the Peace Committee. It was reconstructed as a 51-foot-tall temple, and the deities were consecrated through Vedic rituals.

Distinctive Architecture Draws Visitors

Situated on the route connecting Takht Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib and Kangan Ghat, near the state’s second Tourist Police Station at Chauk, the temple features a distinctive quadrilateral design.

Its architecture attracts pilgrims and visitors travelling through Patna City. The temple houses a Narmadeshwar Shivling along with idols of Nandi, Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya and Bajrangbali. The idols were brought from Banaras in 2018 and installed after a ceremonial procession through the city.

Religious Activities Continue Throughout Sawan

Every Monday during Sawan, large numbers of devotees gather at the temple to perform Jalabhishek. Many also organise Rudrabhishek after the fulfilment of their wishes, continuing a long-standing tradition associated with the shrine.

The temple priest said daily worship is conducted throughout Sawan, alongside continuous recitation of the Ramayana. He added that the temple is cleaned twice a day, and devotees offer Ganga water to the Shivling as part of the daily rituals.
