Patna: The Bihar government has initiated plans to redevelop Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH) in Gaya into a super-specialty healthcare institution, with a focus on expanding advanced medical services, strengthening infrastructure and improving medical education facilities.

The proposal was reviewed on Wednesday during a meeting chaired by Health Minister. Officials discussed the master plan being prepared for the hospital’s long-term redevelopment.

Master Plan Focuses on Future Healthcare Needs

The proposed master plan covers the redevelopment of the hospital campus, expansion of specialised medical facilities, construction of new buildings, enhancement of medical education infrastructure and improvement of patient care services.

Officials directed that the plan should be designed to meet future healthcare requirements while upgrading existing facilities and introducing additional medical services.

The proposed super-specialty status is expected to reduce referrals of patients with serious and complex illnesses and lessen dependence on hospitals in other cities for advanced treatment.

Modern Hostels and Mortuary Complex Proposed

As part of the redevelopment, the government plans to construct a new hostel and a modern mortuary complex equipped with updated facilities. Existing hostel buildings will also be repaired and upgraded.

The master plan also includes strengthening basic infrastructure across the campus, including ensuring an uninterrupted power supply.

Officials instructed the executing agencies to complete the project within the prescribed timeframe, although no completion deadline was announced.

Hospital Recorded More Than 36,000 OPD Patients in June

The review meeting also examined the hospital’s recent clinical performance.

According to data presented during the meeting, ANMMCH treated 36,155 patients in its outpatient department (OPD) in June. During the same period, 2,965 patients received inpatient (IPD) care, while 1,166 emergency cases were handled.

Hospital records also showed that 460 major surgeries and 2,693 minor surgeries were performed during the month.

Hostel Shortage Continues to Affect Medical Education

Officials acknowledged that inadequate hostel accommodation remains one of the institution’s major infrastructure challenges.

The shortage has previously triggered student protests, disrupting academic and hospital activities. At present, more than 300 MBBS students from different batches are living outside the campus because of limited hostel capacity.

The existing hostel buildings also require maintenance, while reports of stray animals entering hostel premises have raised concerns over student safety and living conditions.

Renovation Work Underway

The government said renovation of two previously abandoned hostel buildings is nearing completion. Once operational, the renovated hostels are expected to accommodate around 150 students, providing partial relief from the accommodation shortage.

Officials also noted that Siddharth Hostel remains under illegal occupation, and efforts are continuing to reclaim the building for student use.

Regional Healthcare Expected to Benefit

The proposed transformation of ANMMCH into a super-specialty hospital is intended to strengthen healthcare services across the Magadh region by expanding access to advanced treatment closer to patients’ homes.

The government expects the expansion to reduce referrals to hospitals outside the region while improving access to specialised medical care and supporting the institution’s long-term development.
