Patna: Eighteen police officers and personnel from Bihar have been selected for President’s Police Medals 2026 for gallantry, distinguished service and meritorious service, according to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
The awards have been announced ahead of Independence Day 2026. Of the 18 recipients from Bihar, one has been selected for the Medal for Gallantry, two for distinguished service and 15 for meritorious service.
Who Has Been Selected for the Gallantry Medal?
Bihar Police Inspector Afsar Hussain, posted at Beur police station in Patna, has been selected for the Medal for Gallantry.
The gallantry medal recognises exceptional courage and bravery in the line of duty.
Two Officers Selected for Distinguished Service
Two senior police officers from Bihar have been selected for medals for distinguished service:
- Sanjay Kumar, Inspector General, Special Branch — Distinguished Service
- Bina Kumari, Railway Superintendent of Police, Muzaffarpur — Distinguished Service
15 Personnel Selected for Meritorious Service
The following police officers and personnel from Bihar have been selected for the President’s Police Medal for meritorious service:

When Will the Awardees Be Honoured?
The selected officers and personnel will be honoured on the occasion of Independence Day.
The annual awards recognise personnel from the police, fire services, Home Guard, civil defence and correctional services for distinguished, meritorious or courageous service.
Why Are President’s Police Medals Given?
The President’s Police Medals are announced twice a year, around Independence Day and Republic Day.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the awards recognise exceptional bravery as well as distinguished and meritorious service by personnel serving in eligible uniformed and correctional services.
The Medal for Gallantry is awarded for acts demonstrating exceptional courage and bravery.
When Were the Medals Introduced?
The police medals were instituted on March 1, 1951. Since then, the awards have been used to recognise exceptional acts of bravery and sustained service by personnel in the relevant services.
The 2026 selections place 18 Bihar police officers and personnel among the awardees announced for this year’s Independence Day honours.
