Patna: In response to deteriorating air quality in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Hajipur, the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal have imposed a complete ban on all types of firecrackers. This decision, reinforced by the Patna District Administration, aims to reduce health and environmental risks during Diwali. The administration has urged citizens to opt for eco-friendly celebrations.
Violating the ban is classified as a punishable offense. The Department of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, along with the Bihar State Pollution Control Board, has issued directives for strict enforcement. Authorities emphasize that the toxic chemicals and heavy metals in firecrackers contribute significantly to air pollution, posing serious health risks, particularly to children, the elderly, and individuals with heart and respiratory conditions.
Residents have also been advised not to use kerosene to light diyas, as the smoke can cause eye irritation and respiratory issues. To ensure compliance, Patna’s District Magistrate (DM) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) have formed special raid teams. Sub-divisional officers and police have been instructed to monitor illegal firecracker sales and take legal action when necessary.
