Patna: Light rain is likely in nine districts of Bihar on Monday, while most other parts of the state are expected to experience generally normal weather with sunshine during the day, according to the weather department.
The districts likely to receive light rain or drizzle are East Champaran, West Champaran, Siwan, Saran, Gopalganj, Buxar, Bhojpur, Rohtas and Kaimur.
The weather department has forecast no significant change in maximum temperatures across Bihar over the next three days. Minimum temperatures are also unlikely to see any major change over the next five days.
Weak monsoon activity in Bihar
Monsoon activity remained weak across Bihar during the past 24 hours. Terhagachh in Kishanganj recorded the highest rainfall at 67 mm, while Araria received 58 mm and Madhubani recorded 56 mm.
Begusarai received 12 mm of rainfall, while Patna recorded 6 mm during the same period.
Light to moderate rainfall was reported at a few places in north-central and northeast Bihar, while isolated parts of other regions also received light to moderate showers.
Despite the rainfall, Bihar continues to face a significant monsoon deficit.
From June 1 until now, Bihar should have received around 875.4 mm of rainfall, but the state has recorded only 570.9 mm, resulting in a 35% deficit compared with normal rainfall.
Flood situation remains a concern
The flood situation in Bihar continues to remain serious. According to the latest figures, around 44 lakh people in 2,360 villages across 14 districts are still affected by floodwaters.
Eight rivers in the state are currently flowing above their respective danger levels, keeping the flood situation critical in several areas.
Why is Bihar not receiving widespread rainfall?
Weather experts attribute the limited rainfall activity in Bihar to a low-pressure area over central India.
The main rainfall activity associated with the system is currently concentrated over central India and adjoining areas. The system is likely to move towards southeastern Rajasthan and northern Gujarat over the next 24 hours.
The monsoon trough is also currently passing through central India. As a result, its direct impact on Bihar is relatively weak.
This is why widespread rainfall is not expected across the state, with showers likely to remain confined to selected districts.
Patna likely to remain hot and humid
Patna is expected to remain mostly sunny during the day, with hot and humid conditions. The possibility of significant rainfall is low, although a localised change in weather cannot be ruled out.
The capital recorded 6 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours.
The weather department expects maximum temperatures across most parts of Bihar to remain largely unchanged over the next three days, while minimum temperatures are also expected to remain stable over the next five days.
