Patna: With onion prices in Patna’s retail markets rising to around Rs 50–55 per kg, the National Cooperative Federation of India Limited (NCCF) is set to provide relief to consumers by selling onions at Rs 35 per kg.
NCCF will deploy mobile sale vehicles at several locations across the city, allowing residents to purchase onions at a price significantly lower than the prevailing market rate.
However, customers will be allowed to buy a maximum of 2 kg of onions per person.
Mobile Onion Sale Vehicles to Be Deployed
According to NCCF officials, vehicles selling onions at Rs 35 per kg will be stationed at around half a dozen locations in Patna.
The initiative is aimed at making onions available to consumers at an affordable price amid the recent increase in retail rates. Similar sales were also conducted at some locations in the city on Tuesday.
The mobile outlets are expected to cater to areas with high footfall and demand.

According to NCCF representatives, mobile sale vehicles will be available at several major locations, including:
- Near Gandhi Maidan
- Near Rajendra Nagar Vegetable Market
- Boring Canal Road intersection
- Meethapur
Additional locations may be added depending on demand and availability.
Maximum 2 Kg Per Customer
NCCF has imposed a purchase limit to ensure that the subsidised onions reach more consumers.
Each customer can purchase up to 2 kg of onions at Rs 35 per kg. The limit is intended to prevent bulk buying and ensure wider distribution of the available stock.
Consumers will therefore have to purchase within the prescribed limit at the mobile sale centres.
Onion Prices Around Rs 50–55 Per Kg in Retail Market
Onions are currently being sold for around Rs 50–55 per kg in Patna’s retail markets and vegetable mandis.
At Rs 35 per kg, NCCF’s sale price is approximately Rs 15–20 lower per kg than prevailing market rates.
A customer purchasing the maximum 2 kg quantity could therefore save around Rs 30–40, depending on the prevailing retail price.
Sale May Expand to Other Bihar Cities
NCCF’s subsidised onion sale is not necessarily limited to Patna. Officials indicated that similar arrangements could be considered in other areas depending on demand and availability.
Sales through mobile vehicles may also be introduced in Bhojpur, subject to the availability of onions and local requirements.
Relief for Consumers Amid Rising Vegetable Prices
The rise in onion prices has added pressure to household food budgets, particularly for families already dealing with higher vegetable prices.
The NCCF initiative provides consumers in Patna with an option to purchase onions at a lower rate, although supplies will remain subject to availability and the 2-kg-per-customer limit.
