Patna : The Ganga Flood Control Commission (GFCC) will discuss a risk-based flood control master plan, river water management and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) at its 19th meeting in Delhi on October 27.
The meeting will be chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary are expected to present the state’s position on Ganga flood management, the Farakka Barrage and water-sharing issues.
The agenda also includes reviewing previous flood control measures, developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines, and considering a nationwide dashboard to monitor flood management initiatives.
Farakka Barrage And Ganga Water Sharing In Focus
The Farakka Barrage and the distribution of Ganga water are expected to be key subjects at the meeting. The discussions are significant for Bihar amid the possibility of a renewed India-Bangladesh agreement on Ganga water sharing in December.
Bihar has been raising concerns about safeguarding the state’s interests in decisions related to the river’s water distribution. The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the state to present its position on these issues.
Officials will also discuss flood-related challenges along the Ganga in Bihar and possible measures to address them. Decisions taken during the commission’s 18th meeting are also expected to be reviewed.
Risk-Based Flood Control Master Plan Proposed
The meeting will consider preparing a risk-based master plan for flood control across the country. The discussions are expected to cover the effectiveness of earlier flood management projects and the need for improved planning to address flood risks.
The commission will also discuss guidelines concerning waterways alongside railway and road infrastructure. The proposed guidelines are intended to address water management considerations linked to infrastructure development.
AI-Based DPRs And National Dashboard On Agenda
The use of modern technology, including artificial intelligence, in preparing DPRs for flood control projects will be another key item on the agenda.
Detailed project reports help establish the technical scope and planning requirements of infrastructure projects. The proposed discussion on AI-based preparation will focus on the use of modern technology in this process.
A nationwide dashboard for flood control is also expected to be discussed. The proposed platform could support the monitoring of flood management projects and provide a centralised view of relevant information.
Flood Management Guidelines And SOPs To Be Reviewed
The commission will discuss the preparation of SOPs and guidelines for flood control, alongside measures to improve river water management.
The meeting will also review the outcomes of previous flood control work and consider how future planning can be strengthened. The discussions will cover both national-level planning and issues specific to Bihar, including recurring floods along the Ganga.
The October 27 meeting is expected to bring together concerns relating to flood prevention, infrastructure planning and river water distribution, with Bihar seeking measures to address its flood-related challenges.
