Asia’s Largest Lab at Patna University to Undergo Hi-Tech Renovation with Rs 32 Crore Investment

Patna: Patna University is set to revamp all its postgraduate laboratories, transforming them into state-of-the-art facilities with an investment of Rs 32 crore. The renovation, funded under the Prime Minister’s Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM USHA) scheme, will cover all types of labs, including those for science, IT, and media studies. The initiative also includes the introduction of smart classrooms, marking a significant step towards modernizing higher education infrastructure.

A Long-Awaited Upgrade

Dr. Birendra Prasad, Director of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at Patna University, said the funds will enable the complete overhaul of the university’s postgraduate labs, which have long suffered from inadequate resources. “These funds will address the severe shortage of modern equipment in our labs, which are vital for research and practical work,” he said.

However, Dr. Prasad highlighted the pressing issue of a lack of skilled lab technicians, which has hampered maintenance. “After the renovation, appointing lab technicians will be essential to ensure smooth functioning. A proposal for this will be sent to the state government,” he added.

The Legacy and the Challenges

Once celebrated as Asia’s largest laboratory complex, Patna University’s science labs are now in a dilapidated state. Equipment in physics and chemistry labs is outdated, with some apparatus rusting or rendered unusable. Broken pipelines and a shortage of basic materials, such as chemicals, have further hindered research and practical work.

Departments have struggled to maintain operations with limited or no funding for years. The lack of separate grants for lab upkeep has forced staff to improvise with available resources, leaving students to grapple with substandard facilities.

A Vision for the Future

The Rs 32 crore infusion promises to reverse this decline. The funds will be allocated to upgrade all types of postgraduate labs, including those in science, arts, and IT. The renovation will also include the installation of advanced equipment and hi-tech solutions, which are expected to elevate the quality of education and research at the university.

“University education is inherently research-based,” said Dr. Prasad. “When labs are well-equipped, the overall standard of education improves.”

A New Chapter for Education in Bihar

The modernized labs, coupled with smart classrooms, are expected to position Patna University as a hub for cutting-edge research and learning. The investment underlines the government’s commitment to enhancing higher education in Bihar, offering renewed hope for students and faculty alike.

With this long-overdue initiative, Patna University aims to reclaim its former prestige and set a benchmark for academic excellence in the region.
