Patna: Patna’s skyline is about to change. On June 11, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will inaugurate the city’s first double-decker flyover, a project that promises to transform traffic flow along the congested Ashok Rajpath corridor.
The Rs 422-crore structure stretches from Science College to Kargil Chowk via PMCH and will allow vehicles to move across the city on three distinct levels for the first time.
“This will be a historic moment for Patna,” said Bihar Road Construction Minister Nitin Nabin during an inspection of the site on Monday. “After this project is completed, traffic on one of the city’s busiest stretches will be significantly smoother, benefitting thousands of commuters.”
Patna’s growing traffic congestion, particularly around educational institutions, hospitals and markets on Ashok Rajpath, has long been a source of frustration for residents. The double-decker flyover, built by Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam LImited, is expected to ease this burden, while also complementing the city’s developing metro network.
A Project Of Layers
The project consists of a lower deck (Tier-1) — 1.45 km long — connecting Patna College Main Gate to BN College Main Gate, and an upper deck (Tier-2), 2.2 km in length, running from Kargil Chowk to Patna University Gate (Shatabdi Dwar) and Science College. Both decks feature an 8.5-metre-wide one-way carriageway.
Minister Nabin confirmed that both tiers have now been completed, with 90% of service road construction also finished. The flyover will be integrated with JP Ganga Path — popularly known as Patna’s Marine Drive— via Krishna Ghat, providing an alternative route for vehicles coming from Gandhi Setu and other key entry points into the city.
“This will not only reduce pressure on Ashok Rajpath but also around PMCH, Patna University and Science College,” Nabin added. “Students, patients, businesspeople and daily commuters will all benefit.”
Connecting The City’s Future
Beyond its immediate impact on traffic, the double-decker is also designed with Patna’s long-term transport plans in mind. It will be integrated with the under-construction Patna Metro Rail, improvements along the Bakarganj Nala corridor, and the proposed multi-level parking facility at PMCH.
“The coordination between these infrastructure projects will ensure that Patna’s traffic management system becomes future-ready,” Nabin said.
The double-decker flyover has been constructed with state-of-the-art engineering techniques and, once open, will symbolise Bihar’s push towards modern urban mobility.
As Patna residents prepare to experience three-layered city travel for the first time, expectations are running high. The Ashok Rajpath flyover marks another step in the city’s evolving transport landscape — one that blends the old and the new, aiming for smoother journeys ahead.
