Barauni Refinery Celebrates 60 Years in Patna for Fueling India's Growth

Begusarai: The Indian Oil Corporation’s Barauni Refinery, inaugurated on January 15, 1965, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Established with a vision to fuel India’s growth, the refinery has witnessed a remarkable journey, expanding its production capacity from 1 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to the current 6 MMTPA.

Originally designed to process low-sulfur crude oil, the Barauni Refinery has undergone significant upgrades to meet evolving energy demands, including the modernization of existing units and the addition of new facilities such as CCRU, NSU, and Prime G units.

These advancements have enabled the refinery to produce clean and environment-friendly fuels that comply with BS-VI standards.

Beyond its core operations, the Barauni Refinery has played a crucial role in the socio-economic development of Bihar. Through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the refinery has contributed to education, healthcare, and environmental conservation.

The refinery has undertaken various projects, including providing scholarships to students, strengthening healthcare facilities, installing RO plants for clean drinking water, and establishing a 50-bed state-of-the-art pediatric ward in Begusarai.

Furthermore, the refinery has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability through initiatives such as zero waste management systems, green energy projects, and the development of a 7.58-acre green belt and Eco Park.

The ongoing 9.0 MMTPA capacity expansion project at Barauni Refinery promises to usher in a new era of industrial growth in Bihar.

The establishment of a polypropylene unit will position Bihar as a leader in petrochemical production, creating new employment opportunities and boosting the state’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.

The 60th anniversary of the Barauni Refinery marks a significant milestone, celebrating its contribution to India’s energy sector and its vital role in the socio-economic progress of Bihar.
