Bhagalpur: The long-standing demand for an airport for the people of Bhagalpur is now moving closer to realization. In a significant step toward this goal, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved an amount of ₹37,87,800 for the financial year 2024-25. This funding will be allocated for a site visit and pre-feasibility study, which will be managed by the Directorate of Civil Aviation in Patna. AAI has explicitly stated that this amount is designated solely for the site visit and pre-feasibility study and cannot be diverted for any other purpose.
This initiative has raised hopes of enhancing connectivity for the Bhagalpur region and paves the way for the potential upgradation of Bhagalpur airport. The district administration has submitted proposals for airport operation on three marked sites: Goradih, Akbarnagar, and Sultanganj.
The district administration has earmarked 379 acres of land in Goradih, 855 acres along the Sultanganj-Deoghar Road—south of the under-construction four-lane—and 833.5 acres along the Akbarnagar-Shahkund Road, also south of the four-lane. Marking this land is a crucial step that indicates the administration’s commitment to the airport project.
However, experts caution that it is too early to make any concrete predictions regarding the project until the land is officially marked and the acquisition process begins. Completing the land acquisition and all related legal formalities is essential for ensuring the timely and smooth construction of the airport.
