Patna: The Bihar government on Friday took a significant step towards expanding air connectivity across the state by approving the preparation of pre-feasibility reports for the construction of airports in six cities. A sum of Rs 2.43 crore has been sanctioned for the studies, to be conducted in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The proposed airports will be located in Madhubani, Virpur, Munger, Valmikinagar, Bhagalpur, and Saharsa, and the initiative falls under the Centre’s regional connectivity initiative, UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik).
Briefing the media after the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat, Dr S Siddharth, said the pre-feasibility report will include critical details such as flight routes, the number of potential passengers, and the required runway dimensions and airport area.
“These airports will be strategically developed to boost regional connectivity and economic growth in under-served districts,” Siddharth said, adding that the planning aligns with both central and state priorities for inclusive infrastructure development.
In the same cabinet meeting, the state also approved a 4% horizontal reservation for persons with disabilities in government jobs, as per central guidelines.
The move is seen as part of a broader strategy by the Bihar government to upgrade transportation and public services infrastructure, particularly in regions with limited access to air travel.
