Bihar-Born IB Officer Among 26 Killed in Pahalgam Terror Attack, One of Deadliest Assaults in Kashmir in Years

Patna: An Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer from Bihar was among at least 26 people killed in a horrific terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday. The assault, which took place in the picturesque Baisaran Valley—often referred to as Kashmir’s Mini Switzerland—has been described as one of the deadliest civilian attacks in the region in recent years.
The slain officer, Manish Ranjan, was posted at the IB’s Hyderabad office and was on a Leave Travel Concession (LTC) trip with his family when the attack occurred. According to initial reports, Ranjan was shot dead in front of his wife and children by armed militants.
The attack took place around 2:30 pm when four gunmen opened fire on groups of tourists enjoying the popular meadow in Baisaran, a lush hilltop above Pahalgam town known for its scenic beauty. Dozens were injured in the indiscriminate firing. The Resistance Front (TRF)—a shadow outfit linked to the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba—has claimed responsibility.
Manish Ranjan had been working in the ministerial section of the IB’s Hyderabad office for the past two years. He hailed from Bihar, a state that is now mourning the loss of a native son in an act of senseless violence.
A Nation in Grief, A State in Mourning
Condemning the attack, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar issued a statement expressing deep sorrow:
“The news of the death of tourists in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir is sad. This incident is condemnable. Deep condolences to the bereaved families. Wishing the injured a speedy recovery. The whole country is united against terrorism.”
The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation across the political spectrum, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah promising swift action. A large-scale security operation has been launched in the region to track down the assailants.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the country, particularly as it targeted civilians and off-duty security personnel at a popular tourist spot known for its tranquillity and natural charm.
