Patna: Bihar is bracing for an intensifying heatwave as temperatures across the state have surged past 40°C, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for several districts, including Patna, Gaya, and Buxar. Meteorologists warn that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist until April 25, with day and night temperatures expected to remain uncomfortably high, particularly in southern and west-central Bihar.
In its latest forecast, Patna Meteorological Centre has predicted a 2–4°C rise in maximum temperatures over the next two to three days, pushing mercury levels towards the 45°C mark in many parts of the state. The alert covers key districts such as Siwan, Saran, Bhojpur, Bhabua, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Arwal, and Jehanabad, in addition to the capital.
Patna’s temperature spike has been particularly dramatic—rising over 11 degrees in just five days. From 29.1°C on April 18, the maximum temperature reached 40.5°C on Tuesday, while Gaya recorded the highest temperature at 42.8°C.
According to the IMD, the current conditions—marked by dry air and minimal wind movement—are creating a “felt temperature” that is significantly higher than the recorded one. The combination of heatwave and warm nights is adding to the discomfort, with Buxar, Bhabua, Rohtas, and Aurangabad likely to experience extreme heat even after sundown.
In response, the Health Department has instructed government hospitals to reserve five beds each for treating patients with symptoms of heatstroke or other heat-related conditions.
However, some respite may be on the horizon. From April 26 onward, parts of north Bihar including East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Sheohar, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj may see light rain and thunderstorms, which could bring temporary relief. The rain forecast is expected to remain valid until April 28.
With daytime temperatures well above seasonal norms, authorities have advised residents to take all necessary precautions, remain hydrated, and avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours.
